APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP): Operation Sustainability at University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy

Second year University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy students Kiri Carmody (left) and Diane Lee (below) have embarked on a journey to bring sustainability initiatives to their school. Through the creation of Operation Sustainability within their APhA-ASP chapter, the implementation of the PHRC project, and the upcoming revamp to the co-curricular elementary schools program, Kiri and Diane are bringing a number of ideas to life, emphasizing sustainability in the field of pharmacy.

Kiri's passion for sustainability took root during her high school years while enrolled in AP Environmental Science. Immersed in the curriculum, she not only gained knowledge but also embraced the lifestyle changes essential for fostering a healthy, sustainable life. This early exposure inspired Kiri to pursue a minor in environmental science, further fueling her commitment to championing sustainability at CU.

Similarly, Diane has been a longtime environmental advocate, working in a sustainability non-profit prior to pharmacy school and hopes to continue supporting the intersection of climate and human health through pharmacy.

Operation Sustainability has helped to make a home for various sustainability events and initiatives in the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy including cross-campus collaborations with Healthy Air and Water Colorado, and the successful completion of their school’s first Planetary Health Report Card. These endeavors underscore the school's commitment to fostering a culture of environmental consciousness and responsibility.

Want to submit a Planetary Health Report Card for your school? Reach out to contact@phreportcard.org for information on how to get started. Deadlines for completion of this year's report cards is March 31, 2024. Results will be released on Earth Day!
